We're one of the UK's largest district heating network
Aberdeen Heat and Power (AHP) is a not-for-profit company with the overarching goal of alleviating fuel poverty by providing affordable low-carbon heat and hot water to households across the city.
We were established by Aberdeen City Council in 2002 and our seven combined heat and power energy centre networks now serve a mix of private residential and commercial enterprises as well as local authority multi-storey blocks, houses, and public spaces.
AHP is an organisation built on solid foundations and fully committed to developing low-carbon technologies and harnessing new fuels to support Aberdeen’s successful transition to decarbonisation a Net Zero future.
In 2026, energy regulator Ofgem extended to heat networks the protection already enjoyed by consumers with other gas and electricity suppliers, further enhancing our customers’ peace of mind.

Social
From the outset, AHP’s key purpose has been to provide affordable warmth for all Aberdeen citizens to enjoy, with an unshakeable commitment to prioritising people over profit. Since 2002, we’ve seen multi-storey residents enjoy a significant drop in heating costs and as they can afford to heat their homes, this also improves the fabric of the buildings they live in. The result? A measurable improvement in residents’ health and a drop in tenancy turnover.
Environmental
At the moment, AHP uses gas-fired combined heat and power to deliver heat, hot water and — for some properties — electricity. We have already reduced carbon emissions when measured against other suppliers, and we continuously explore lower-emission solutions as we work towards our ultimate goal of using exclusively zero-carbon technologies.
Economic
Lower heating bills leave consumers with more money to spend, and this helps boost the local economy. We also employ six team members in key roles and we support many others in the local supply chain, among them the engineers and plumbers who install and maintain our networks, plant, and AHP’s equipment within the public and private buildings on our networks.
Who we are
At the helm of AHP is our CEO Ian Davidson who leads a dedicated team of financial, technical, and energy professionals. They are supported by external advisors, with strategic guidance coming from our board of directors, led by chair Sandra Macdonald, and Aberdeen City Council. Our directors are selected for their expertise, experience, and knowledge across a broad range of relevant areas.
AHP is wholly owned by the city council as a not-for-profit ‘arm’s length external organisation’ (ALEO) with any surpluses reinvested into our networks. We are a priority partner in delivering the city council’s local heat and energy efficient strategy (LHEES).
How we deliver low‑carbon heat
We distribute and supply heat and hot water to public and private customers across Aberdeen via our low-carbon energy centre networks with the heat generated through combined heat and power and waste heat recovery technologies.
Combined heat and power systems increase energy efficiency by up to 80%-90% compared to traditional power plants while also reducing carbon emissions. At AHP we are also able to recover waste heat from public buildings including the Lynx Ice Arena, Tullos Energy from Waste centre and Hazlehead Crematorium.
